HOA Approves Efforts!

I'm happy to report that I met with the Home Owner's Association on Thursday, March 10 and received approval and backing to continue my campaign for speed humps along Pendula Path.  We discussed other options such as impeding curbs, but it was decided that this was the best course of action, and the HOA promised to fund the 10% cost of the humps once we get approval from the Town of Apex.

I still need ot turn in a completed petition to the town's police department.  I have 22 signatures thus far...and would like to have at least another 5 before submission.  I've had only one resident who refused to sign, so I think we have a pretty good ratio going and I appreciate everyone's support.

I hope to see and meet the remaining residents very soon!

Thank you all so very much.

Update - March 8, 2011 - Discussion with Apex Transportation Engineer

I talked to Russ Dalton, the Apex Transportation Engineer (nice guy).  He will mention our concern to the Police Department and solicit a traffic study of Pendula Path, but encouraged me to go ahead with the petition.  He stated that 70% to 75% of the residents need to sign the petition...right now we have just over 50% (18 of 35 households).  I will be making another round for signatures on Saturday, March 12...or if you have time before that, please call my cell at (919) 656-9885 and I can bring it by your house at our mutual convenience.

Russ stated that he guesstimated that IF speed humps were warranted, three humps total would be installed.  Total cost per hump is between $2500 and $3000 with the Home Owner's Association requiring to pay 10% of that cost.  I will be addressing this need and possble cost to the HOA on Thursday evening, March 10 and soliciting their approval of funds when we get that far.

I'll share more info as I get more info!

Thank you for signing the petition!

My daughter and I visited every home along Pendula Path and Goldspot Court with petition in hand.  Of the 35 homes, only 15 answered the door...but everyone one of them signed the petition!  Thank you so much.

For those homes where people weren't home or were unable to answer, I plan to make another visit either Sunday (although it's supposed ot rain) or one evening this week.  I encourage all who signed to make sure others are aware of the need for signatures.  It's important that we send a strong message to the Town of Apex that we think speed humps should be strongly considered.

In my conversations with some of the neighbors (many of whom I've met for the first time), the topic of "crazy drivers" or people "flying down the road" was brought up.  I'm glad and encouraged to see that I'm not the only person to be aware of this problem.

Thank you for your support and please let me know if you have any questions!

Link to Apex "Traffic Calming Device" Policy

For those of you who might be interested in Apex's policy for requesting and installing traffic calming devices (speed humps), please check out this link:  http://apexnc.org/docs/const/traffic.pdf

As you can see, it's a rather long process and I appreciate everyone's assistance and support in trying to get such devices onto Pendula Path for the safety of all residents.

Petition for Speed Humps

As the warm weather approaches, the children that live on Pendula Path and Goldspot Court will be out riding bikes, skateboards and generally playing in yards and along the roadside.  It is very important that we and all drivers are aware of their presence and drive at a safe speed.  While most drivers tend to follow the 25 MPH speed limit, there are many cars that pass along Pendula Path at a higher, unsafe speed.
Our road is a convenient connector between Pearson Farms and Dogwood Ridge, allowing cars to take a short-cut back and forth from White Dogwood to access the Apex Peakway.  With the completion of Route 540 not long away, it stands to reason that many cars will use Pendula Path to cut through on their way to the highway’s interchange along Old Highway 1 (Salem Street).  The chance for higher speed traffic and unsafe conditions for our children is only going to increase.
One solution to slow traffic along Pendula Path is to add speed bumps, or “Traffic Calming Humps.”  Other area neighborhoods such as Beckett Farms and Cameron Park have had them installed, and it’s felt that Pendula Path should be considered for installation of calming humps as well.
The first step is to submit a request and petition to the police department.  I will be circulating a petition over the weekend (March 5 and 6) for signatures from residents of Pendula Path and Goldspot Court.  This petition will be to support a traffic study of Pendula Path by the police department in an effort to confirm the need for calming humps.  This will be for Pendula Path only and not White Dogwood Road or Patterson Grove Road.   For those of you who have concerns about the affects of calming humps on emergency response vehicles, part of the evaluation process is to have town engineers review this concern.  However, the police department and engineers can’t review unless we have a petition to start the process off.
I would hope that all residents sign this petition in order to get the process started.  If you are not in support of installing calming humps, I ask that you drive at a safe speed and ask others to do the same.
The petition will be presented to the Board meeting on Thursday, March 10 at 7:00PM.
